Hawaii, with its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, is a dream destination for many travelers. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a bit of both, the islands offer something for everyone. However, planning the perfect trip to Hawaii involves considering various factors, including the timing of your visit. So, when is the best time to visit Hawaii? Let’s dive in and explore.
I believe the best time to visit Hawaii is during the “shoulder season” months: April, May and September through November (before turkey day). What is the best month to visit? September. Why? Good weather, less crowded and good prices.

What is the best month to visit Hawaii? September fore sure, but October comes in close second and is my fav. time to visit Oahu- we got married in Ohau in October ;). The weather was magical and perfect in early October.
September typically has the best weather and less people, the best prices at hotels/resorts and the best ocean conditions for swimming and snorkeling. The vibe was very laid back and chill when we went during this time. October is also a great time to visit the islands, however, be mindful of the ocean conditions when visiting. Waikiki beach was calm for the most part, a bit wavey but still great for swimming. When we headed up to the Northshore (Oahu), the ocean conditions were different than Waikiki. October can bring large swells making ocean conditions dangerous and the waves were higher and rough; not ideal for swimming especially with little ones.
This can make packing for Hawaii difficult, so make sure you know what to pack for the time of year.
One of the primary considerations when planning a trip to Hawaii is the weather. The islands enjoy warm temperatures year-round, making it an ideal destination regardless of the season. However, there are slight variations depending on the time of year and the island you’re visiting.
The length of day and temperature are pretty uniform throughout the year. Keep in mind though, Hawaii does still get rain.
Hawaii experiences peak rain from November through March. However, the rain varies on different sides of each island. When it rains in Hawaii, it’s very different from what you’re used to. The rain is warm and does not last long. All-day rain is rare.
When booking your accommodations, keep in mind that the Leeward side of the island gets less rain and has more sunny days compared to the windward side.
The coldest time in Hawaii are from January through March. The average low temps is the high 60s to low 70s. The summers can get quite hot, but rarely reach the 90s. If you are looking for warm temperatures then I’d stick to the shoulder seasons.
Hawaii hurricane season is from June 1st through November 30th. The Hawaiian islands are susceptible to tropical storms but its rare. The latest ones being Lane (2018), Iniki (1992) and Iwa (1982) having caused major damage through severe winds and heavy rain. If a warning happens during your vacation, you’ll likely get frustrated as it may disrupt your plans until it passes. Hawaii.gov is a great site to visit for more information on Issues and Advisories.
When it comes to swimming in Hawaii’s crystal-clear waters, timing is key to ensuring the most enjoyable experience for all ages. From ocean temperatures to wave sizes and kid-friendly destinations, here’s a mini guide to help you plan the perfect aquatic adventure.
Ocean Temperature: Hawaii’s ocean temperatures remain invitingly warm throughout the year, ranging from around 74°F (23°C) in the winter months to about 82°F (28°C) during the summer. This means you can take a dip and swim comfortably regardless of the season. However, if you prefer warmer waters, visiting during the summer months might be preferable.
Wave Conditions: While Hawaii is renowned for its legendary surf spots, not all beaches have waves suitable for swimming, especially for little ones. Generally, wave conditions are calmer during the summer months, making it an ideal time for family-friendly swimming. However, it’s essential to check local conditions and advisories before entering the water, as wave patterns can vary depending on the location and weather conditions. It’s best for swimming in the summer months when the waters are calm on the north and south shores of the islands.
Be sure to check out the ocean conditions, flags and Hawaii Beach Safety before swimming. During the winter, Oahu’s Northshore experiences extremely big waves (big wave surfing). You can head to the beaches (Pipeline) to watch the surfers and maybe catch a surf competition depending when you visit.
Hawaii, with its picturesque landscapes and vibrant culture, is a dream destination for many travelers. While it’s known for its luxury resorts and indulgent experiences, exploring the islands on a budget is entirely feasible with careful planning. If you’re looking to experience the beauty of Hawaii without breaking the bank, timing your visit right can make all the difference.
If you are looking for the cheapest island, you should book accommodations in Oahu for their hotel prices. Vacation rental daily rates are typically lower in the fall months, with the lowest month(s) being October and early November.
You can price shop on Discount Hawaii Car Rental for the best rates with no pre-pay or download the app Turo and scroll through the rentals by the type of vehicle you are looking for. You can usually find great deals in your price range and preference of year/model.
The summer and winter in Hawaii brings the crowds. The winter brings snowbirds who want to escape the cold or travel with their family during school breaks. A lot of families choose to stay in vacation rentals, which is why prices are higher than average during the winter. With school break in the summer, it is considered peak season in Hawaii.
Christmas time is another expensive time to visit due to the popularity of the islands for the holidays. While it may be the most expensive time, it is still a very magical time on the islands.
Ultimately, the best time to visit Hawaii depends on your preferences and priorities. Whether you’re seeking sunny beaches, cultural experiences, or outdoor adventures, there’s something for everyone year-round in the Aloha State. By considering factors such as weather, events, and budget, you can plan the perfect Hawaiian getaway that suits your needs and preferences. So, pack your bags and get ready to experience paradise in Hawaii!
