As a travel agent specializing in Hawaii vacations, the question I get asked the most is where to stay in Kauai? There are a lot of places to stay in Kauai, and different parts of the island with different vibes.

Before we get started, let me introduce myself. My name is Kristin Vetter, and I am a Hawaii Travel Advisor. I’m the owner of Salty Luxe Travel Agency LLC. I personally travel to Hawaii several times a year, around the islands. I’ve toured and stayed at many resorts and I am here to offer my best recommendations. I love creating amazing custom trips for my clients! If you’d like help planning your Hawaii vacation, contact me today!

The Best Places To Stay In Kauai

Kauai is divided into four main regions, each offering its own unique charm. The North Shore, home to Princeville and Hanalei, is known for its lush mountains, dramatic cliffs, and stunning beaches like Hanalei Bay, but it is far from everything else. One of the best resorts in Kauai is located here with a few other options. It’s important to note that there is only one bridge and it can occasionally be closed due to bad weather.

The South Shore, including Poipu and Koloa, is the sunniest part of the island, famous for its golden beaches, luxury resorts, and great snorkeling.

The East Side, or the Coconut Coast, features towns like Kapa’a and Lihue, offering easy access to waterfalls, hiking trails, and local shops. There is one decent place to stay in Lihue, but its mostly industrial. There are a few places in Kapa’a.

The West Side, home to Waimea and Kekaha, is more remote and rugged, boasting the breathtaking Waimea Canyon and Polihale Beach. No matter where you stay, Kauai’s natural beauty and aloha spirit are everywhere!

Is There A Bad Time To Visit Kauai?

Kauai is a year-round destination, but if you’re wondering whether there’s a “bad” time to visit, the answer depends on your preferences. Kauai’s weather is warm and tropical year-round, with temperatures averaging between 70-85°F. However, it is the rainiest of the Hawaiian Islands, especially on the North Shore, where lush greenery thrives due to frequent showers.

The rainiest months are typically November through March, which can bring heavier downpours, particularly in Hanalei and Princeville. That said, the South Shore (Poipu) tends to be drier and sunnier year-round, making it a great option during the wetter months.

The summer months (May to September) are the sunniest and driest across the island, perfect for beach days and hiking. While winter brings more rain, it also offers big surf on the North Shore and humpback whale watching, making it a magical time to visit. No matter when you go, Kauai’s beauty shines—just plan accordingly based on your ideal mix of sunshine and adventure!

Do I Need A Rental Car In Kauai?

Although the island is small, it’s highly recommended to rent a car if you wan to explore the island fully. While there are taxis, shuttles, and limited public transportation, they don’t provide the flexibility needed to visit Kauai’s top attractions. I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental. You’ll find the best prices, and you can reserve now and pay upon arrival.
